Mama’s Night In Round-Up: Staying Safe, Sane & Entertained

At the beginning of April, a lovely bunch of us got together to chat about how we’re finding things in lockdown. Many Mama’s were juggling childcare with work and the usual life admin and unsurprisingly feeling overwhelmed. A few of us were struggling to find things to keep our little ones (and ourselves) entertained. Luckily, we had the pleasure of chatting with Dr Jo Montgomery from Dr Jo Science Solutions. Jo is a Mama to two girls, a qualified teacher and research scientist. Jo has more than 20 years experience delivering fun and engaging hands-on science workshops in schools. So, she seemed like the ideal guest to help us find some things to keep our children entertained during the current lockdown.

A lot of Mama’s who joined us had younger children (1 – 2 years) and so Jo focussed on activities we could do with them, examples included water play – where you can see how different things might float or just have lots of fun splashing around in the garden, or making shadows with our favourite dinosaur toys! Jo also recommended some great places to look for ideas: – has loads of crafting fun – which has ideas categorised by age (including babies & toddlers) and an ‘Self-isolation Survival Guide’ – Toddler car wash sound fun?

I think though Jo’s most valuable tip, which really stuck in my mind, was to not be afraid to repeat activities. There’s no need to keep coming up with lots of different things if your baby or toddler is enjoying them – leave them be, let them play. Other top tops included finding a little rhythm or routine to your day, we all recognised that helped our children feel safe when they know what to expect and finally, keep things simple and relaxed.

I’d also recommend checking out Jo’s own website and social media channels (@DrJoScience on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) for more fun activities to try at home and if your children are a bit bigger, Jo has a fantastic online science club:

‘Mama’s Night In’ is  a series of free online events for Mamas and Mamas-to-be. They’re an opportunity to take an hour for yourself and chat with other like-minded and friendly Mamas about Mama-life. We share tips, advice, ask questions and vent about any worries or anxieties and we’re generally joined by an interesting guest who share their thoughts on a variety of topics.
